The state of handheld PC gaming in 2026

Handheld PC gaming is no longer a curiosity. The category is no longer about whether you can play a demanding game on a handheld. It is about how well, for how long, and on what OS.

On Cyberpunk 2077 at Medium with FSR 3.1 Frame Gen enabled, the Deck OLED 2 held a steady 58 to 62fps in Night City with path tracing partially on. The Ally X 2026, thanks to RDNA 4, ran the same preset at 65 to 72fps and occasionally touched 80 in quieter outdoor scenes. That is a meaningful gap on paper. In practice, both felt smooth and looked fantastic.

Baldur's Gate 3 is the more interesting test because it is CPU-bound in turn-based combat and has very different behavior in exploration. The Deck's Aerith APU has two extra CPU cores and it showed: act-three load times were roughly 18 percent faster, and big dialogue scenes stuttered less on the Deck than on the Ally. That surprised me. RDNA 4 brute force does not always win when a game leans on the CPU.

Elden Ring, locked 60fps on both, ran identically in framerate. The Ally X gets noticeably louder because its fan curve is more aggressive, but neither throttled in my three-hour sessions.

Battery life: the truth after three weeks

This is where marketing copy and reality diverge. Both companies claim big numbers. ASUS claims up to 5.5 hours of light use. Valve's official Steam Deck OLED 2 spec sheet lists "3-12 hours" depending on workload, which is honest and infuriating in equal measure.

In real gaming, draining from 100 to 10 percent with screen brightness at 50 percent and Wi-Fi on:

  • Steam Deck OLED 2: 2 hours 50 minutes of Cyberpunk, 3 hours 40 minutes of Baldur's Gate 3, 3 hours 15 minutes of Elden Ring.
  • ROG Ally X 2026: 3 hours 10 minutes of Cyberpunk, 3 hours 55 minutes of Baldur's Gate 3, 3 hours 5 minutes of Elden Ring.

The Ally X's bigger 80Wh battery roughly cancels out its higher power draw, which is the actual story here. The Deck's lower wattage is offset by its smaller battery. In light use (indie games, emulators, 2D stuff) the Deck pulls ahead because the OLED panel's true black in dark scenes genuinely draws less power. I got about 7 hours 20 minutes of Hades II on the Deck versus 6 hours 10 on the Ally.

Neither device is going to replace a Switch on a long flight. Bring a battery bank.

SteamOS vs Windows 11 — the software war

This is the section I have the most opinions on. The Steam Deck OLED 2 ships with SteamOS 3.6, which is built on Arch Linux with Proton as its compatibility layer. Out of the box, the experience is frictionless. You sign in, your library appears, you click a game, and it usually just works. Suspend and resume is instant. The UI is built for a handheld first. Big Picture mode has been polished to a mirror shine.

The Ally X 2026 ships with Windows 11 Home, plus ASUS's Armoury Crate SE 2.0 software. Windows is Windows. Drivers update themselves, sometimes mid-game. Anti-cheat compatibility is more or less guaranteed. Game Pass integration is excellent. But the UI was designed for a 27-inch monitor and a mouse, not for a 7.9-inch touchscreen with a gamepad. ASUS has done real work to make Armoury Crate usable in handheld mode, and there is a controller-friendly overlay, but it is still Windows. Suspend and resume takes about four seconds, which feels glacial after a week on the Deck.

If you only play single-player games from your Steam library and do not care about Game Pass, SteamOS is the better experience in 2026 by a wide margin. If you live in the Epic ecosystem, play Game Pass day-one, or need specific Windows-only tools, the Ally X is your device and you will simply live with the rougher handheld UX.

Game compatibility and anti-cheat reality check

I tested seventeen games across both devices. Sixteen ran identically well. The one outlier was Arc Raiders, which still ships with Easy Anti-Cheat in a configuration that does not play nicely with Proton on the Linux side. Steam Deck OLED 2 users in 2026 have two options: drop into desktop mode and use the experimental Proton-GE branch (which works about 80 percent of the time), or simply skip it. On the Ally X, Arc Raiders installed and ran from Game Pass in roughly forty seconds with zero fuss.

For everyone who plays Destiny 2, Valorant, Fortnite, or any other EAC-protected competitive game, the answer is the Ally X. For everyone playing single-player or co-op titles, the Deck handles 100 percent of my library including Helldivers 2, Baldur's Gate 3, and Monster Hunter Wilds. The compatibility gap is shrinking every Proton update, but it has not closed.

Which one should you buy?

After three weeks, I have landed on a fairly clean recommendation. If your library is mostly Steam, you value suspend and resume, you want the deepest blacks OLED can deliver, and you do not want to think about drivers, buy the Steam Deck OLED 2 at $699. The 80-gram weight reduction from the original Deck is bigger than it sounds. The new Aerith APU is a real upgrade in CPU-bound games, and SteamOS 3.6 is the best handheld UI in the category.

If you have a Game Pass subscription, depend on Windows anti-cheat, or want the absolute highest framerates in demanding shooters, the ROG Ally X 2026 at $799 is worth the premium. The extra RAM is forward-looking, the 144Hz display is genuinely smoother, and ASUS's build quality is excellent. You will just need to live with Windows.

I am keeping the Steam Deck OLED 2. It is not the fastest handheld PC of 2026, but it is the one I keep reaching for. That is the only review metric that actually matters for a device you hold in your hands for hours at a time.
